Tools you will need

Before we go ahead with this tutorial, it’s good to know what supplies you will need to complete the job. This fix is only for chips that are fresh. It will not work for chips that are rusted with paint lifting at the edges. With that in mind, here are the tools you will need:

  • Denatured alcohol
  • Matches
  • Polishing compound
  • Touch-up paint
  • Soap and water
  • Primer

Make the chip disappear in a few steps

  1. Clean the paint chip. Start with cleaning the paint chip area with soap and water. Dry the area with a soft cotton cloth to avoid making the chip bigger. Then apply a small dab of the polishing compound to the paint chip. Only do about a dozen swirls to avoid damaging the clear coat.
  2. Apply denatured alcohol. Applying the denatured alcohol will remove any wax or grime that has remained behind. Only use a small amount to avoid flooding the area.
  3. Apply paint primer with match. After the alcohol has dried, use the butt end of a match to apply paint primer. Only fill the area within the paint chip just touching the edges of the surrounding area. Wait about an hour for the primer to dry fully.
  4. Paint the chipped area. Once the primer has dried, apply a small coat onto the paint chip over the primer coat. Wait an hour before applying a second coat. If needed, apply another coat after waiting another hour. Allow the paint to cure for a few days before applying the polishing compound again to feather out the edges.
